  • SkillsUSA Arizona Receives Nearly $12K from Lowe's for TeamWorks

    admin 11:20 am on January 16, 2010 | 0 Permalink | Reply

PHOENIX, AZ – Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $11,800 grant to the Arizona association of SkillsUSA to support its 2010 state-level construction trades competitive event, TeamWorks. This state event requires a team of four to build a joint project in twelve hours or less, demonstrating their preparation for employment in residential construction. Team members must analyze a project drawing, write an action plan, give a presentation and demonstrate their ability to work as a team performing skills in residential carpentry, plumbing, electricity and masonry. They are also judged on cleanliness of jobsite, timeliness of completing the project and proper inventorying of tools and equipment.

The state event will be held on April 12-13, 2010 at 10AM-4PM on April 12 and 8AM to 4PM on Tuesday, April 14 at the Phoenix Convention Center, South Building. Expected to participate are 18 teams of high school and college students competing for gold, silver and bronze medallions and industry awards.

Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation is helping to address the country’s growing skilled worker shortage and skills gap by contributing a total of $1.5 million to SkillsUSA programs. In 2009, Lowe’s awards SkillsUSA Arizona $10,000 for this event.

Lowe’s has awarded grants to over half of SkillsUSA state associations for their 2010 TeamWorks events.
“TeamWorks competitions provide a rare opportunity for today’s youth to receive hands-on experience in construction trades,” said Larry D. Stone, chairman of Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. “By supporting TeamWorks, Lowe’s is working to motivate and inspire future industry leaders and spark interest in careers where skilled workers are in demand.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 13 percent increase in employment between 2004 and 2012, and 85 percent of America’s jobs are now considered “skilled.” A 2006 American Society for Training & Development study identified a “skills gap” in areas including: basic skills (e.g., academics, customer service, communications); technical and professional skills; management and leadership skills; and emotional intelligence, including self-discipline and persistence.

“The partnership of SkillsUSA and Lowe’s will have an important impact on education and economic development,” said Tim Lawrence, executive director of SkillsUSA. “SkillsUSA helps students develop their abilities in all four skills areas highlighted by employers. And, community service as service learning has documented benefits in students’ education outcomes and community development. Our students and teachers are champions at work, and these grants will allow them to build lots of things together. We thank Lowe’s for helping our chapters and instructors to become even more effective.”

  • Survey Says... LTC was a hit!

    admin 10:18 am on November 24, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply

Thanks to the LTC planning committee, our dedicated Advisors and the awesome group of motivated students in attendance, our annual Leadership Training Camp was a huge success! Students started their camp experience with a very lively and interactive scavenger hunt that included the banana dance, the “I’m a little teapot” dance and various other challenges as they toured our new camp location.

The Keynote Speaker was Isaias Favela, past state and national officer, and graduate from the CAT ThinkBIG program. He inspired students with his own SkillsUSA story about striving to be the very best in everything. His experience and story is not unique, many of our members derive their desire to excel through the leadership and inspirational opportunities that are available at SkillsUSA conferences, support and encouragement from their Advisor and participation in their local chapter.

The Lost Canyon camp in Williams, AZ housed over 300 participants. A dedicated group of students and teachers, under the direction of the Maureen Laupp, prepared, served and cleaned-up after each meal. Our camp would not have been possible without the enthusiasm of the work crew!

SkillsUSA Arizona’s leadership camp featured a rock-star list of speakers including Travis Hearn, Phoenix Suns Chaplain, Dr. Arden Berkovitz, Einstein Alive, Adrian Hernandez, Dallas Mavericks and past national SkillsUSA officer, Stephanie Brewer, past state and national officer, Michael DeSchalit, hypnotist, Isaias Favela, past state and national officer, Craig Campbell, Real Colors trainer, Carrie O’Grady, Able Information Technologies, Inc. and Chris Bisgrove, Able Information Technologies, Inc.

Corporate sponsor, Able Information Technologies, Inc., has supported SkillsUSA Arizona and the annual Leadership Training Camp for over 5 years. Brandon Ames, President & CEO, believes wholeheartedly in SkillsUSA’s mission and provides staff to serve on the leadership camp planning committee and to attend the event.

  • SkillsUSA chapters focus on development

    admin 4:17 pm on October 26, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply

Beginning in September, SkillsUSA has offered three Chapter Management Seminars to help student leaders and teachers learn to run an effective SkillsUSA chapter.

Career and technical education students from throughout Arizona attended the interactive seminars and included 375 students and teachers. The ten hour trainings were held in Phoenix on September 3 and October 20 and in Tucson on October 2, 2009. Students and teachers were separated for four hours of the day in order to focus on adult and student specific items and to lay the foundation for the remainder of the 9AM to 6PM seminar. Teachers earned professional development hours and experienced hands-on sessions from seasoned Advisors.

Once the teachers joined the students again all were involved in sessions that include fundraising, public relations, social activities, competitions, working in committees, business and industry partnerships, goal setting and finally developing a program of work for the school year.

These motivated students are enrolled in programs including cosmetology, web design and welding to carpentry, prepared speech, robotics engineering, construction and many others. The students and teachers ended the day with group presentations and the tools to effectively run a SkillsUSA program in their local high school.

For the last 5 days, I have traveled with ten SkillsUSA Arizona students and teachers while in Washington D.C. for the annual Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI).

This event has been constant force for SkillsUSA and career and technical education since 1965. Each year a few hundred students represent hundreds of thousands of SkillsUSA members and CTE students when speaking with our elected officials. The Arizona Team met with staff in the offices of Rual Grijalva, Gabrielle Giffords, Trent Franks, Jon Kyl, John Shadegg, Harry Mitchell and Ann Kirkpatrick.

Our students carried an important message regarding the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act that was reauthorized in 2006 to our elected officials. They told their personal CTE and SkillsUSA stories focusing on the benefits of the federal funding for their career choices. It was truly amazing to watch these young people, who are almost adults, talk with passion, pride and professionalism.

While in Washington DC we visited several museums, toured many of the monuments including the World War II Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, The White House, Jefferson Memorial and the Franklin Deleanor Roosevelt Memorial. As a demonstration of our respect for those who have served our Nation, we visited Arlington National Cemetery, SkillsUSA participated in an official wreath laying ceremony and then traveled to the Pentagon Memorial honoring those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 plane crash into the Pentagon.

Students also participated in national leadership training while advisors and state directors were fortunate to have a dignified group of speakers include representatives from the Association for Career and Technical Education, National Governor’s Association, Capitol Advantage, Inc., Office of Veteran’s Affairs and the U.S. Department of Education.

It was a highly educational experience for students and advisors alike. Congratulations to our attendees for a job well done!
